The Beauty Benefits of Coconut Oil

Earlier this month, for American Heart Month, I wrote about how coconut oil can be good for your heart health. The benefits of coconut oil don't stop there, though. It is also fantastic for your skin and hair!

Coconut Oil & Skin Care

All this cold, winter weather can really do a number on your skin. After learning about the harmful ingredients, like phthalates, that can be found in commercially available lotions, I began looking for alternative ways to protect and nourish my skin.

This search led me to coconut oil. Most lotions we use on our skin contain refined vegetable oils that do not possess natural, protective antioxidants. Coconut oil is an effective moisturizer on all types of skin, especially dry skin. It has also been shown to help in treating various skin problems including dermatitis, eczema and xerosis. Not to mention, coconut oil can also help delay the appearance of wrinkles and aging due to its amazing antioxidant delivery.

While coconut oil is good, virgin coconut oil is even better! Virgin Coconut Oil is different than other oils as it is unrefined oil and therefore hasn't been stripped of any of its natural components through the refining process. This makes virgin coconut oil useful in fighting oxidative damage caused by free radicals.

So, in addition to being a terrific moisturizer, coconut oil's antioxidant properties can help protect the skin and fight against aging. I love to add Chaé Brain & Boost, a coconut oil with concentrated MCTs, to my favorite lotion and apply it right after I get out of the shower. I also add a little to my children’s bath and mix it with my dog’s shampoo when bathing her! The possibilites are endless!

Coconut Oil & Hair Care

Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrients for your hair. The Journal of Cosmetic Science researchers believe that coconut oil is superior to other oils. It promotes healthy growth, shine and reduces protein loss. It’s been used as a treatment for dry scalp and hair damaged from chemical processing.

My hair was damaged due to color treatment and, after I started using coconut oil, I saw a marked difference in the health of my hair. In fact, whenever I use coconut oil, I’ll rub whatever is left on my hands through the ends of my hair. It can also be used before straightening with a flat iron to protect your hair from the extreme heat. Use coconut oil to get your hair feeling silky and smooth!
