Halloween: A Treat Without a Toxic Trick!

October 28th, 2014, in Living ToxicFree®, Families, ToxicFree® Recipes

From fall festivals, to trick-or-treaters, to classmate favors—activities this time of year often include candies full of sugar and toxins such as artificial flavorings, dyes, sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and benzoate.

We live in a world where it’s difficult to completely deny our children treats, but if your children are anything like mine—getting a prize on Halloween that isn’t candy is a special delight. Especially if it’s ooey, gooey, slime!

This Halloween we are making homemade slime as an alternative to giving out candy to friends and classmates.

And always staying true to our ToxicFree® lifestyle— Safe and Simple, while Saving money…. this recipe requires only 2 ingredients. The third is optional.

You will need:

Step 1: Combine 3 tablespoons of Powdered Fiber with 2 cups of water along with a small scoop of greens (we use the dark spinach, kale, seaweed mixture used for smoothies) or a dash of dark red juice. (If you decide to use food coloring you will need approximately 2-3 drops.) You may have to experiment with how deep you want the color.

Step 2: When your mixture is ready, bring to a boil on the stove, stir the mixture, let cool for a few minutes, and then boil again.

Or, you can use a microwave. If you choose to microwave, cook for 4-5 minutes, remove with glove as it will be hot! Stir and let cool for 5 minutes, cook another 4-5 minutes and let cool completely. Remember to use a glass container—you don’t want toxins from your plastic bowl to leach into the air or the mixture your kids will be playing with! If you accidentally add too much liquid, just add a little more fiber and stir well and try heating again.

Step 3: After the mixture has fully cooled, test to see if you are happy with the consistency. If it’s too slimy and you want it more like “flubber,” cook 2-3 minutes longer, let cool once again and retest the consistency. Microwaves vary on cooking.

Step 4: Once your slime has reached the desired consistency and has fully cooled, it’s ready for the kids to play with! Store in an airtight container for up to several weeks. For Halloween favors put it in individual plastic bags and tie with ribbon. Make sure guest know it isn’t candy.

We hope your family enjoys this safe, fun alternative to handing out candy.

Happy Halloween!
