When our family decided to go toxic-free, I knew that three things had to happen in order for us to be able to change to this lifestyle. First, I had to know the products I was choosing to replace my current everyday toxic products with were safe. We live in the sickest generation that has ever been. The studies linking chemicals in the products we use to diseases like breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and developmental issues, infertility, and endocrine disruptors—keep growing.
Second, I knew the process to do this had to be simple. Knowing the products inside of our home had to be safe was a given for us. But, figuring out how to replace them overwhelmed me. At first, I was afraid that it was going to be time consuming and take a lot of energy I didn’t have to give. Lastly, I didn’t want to spend more money than I was already spending. I was concerned as to how expensive replacing my toxic filled products would be.
At the time, I had no idea that making our home a toxic-free home could actually make life so much easier—and save us money at the same time! Here is how we made going toxic-free simple and fun.
It was a given I needed to make sure I was replacing toxic filled products with toxic-free ones. But, considering I couldn’t even pronounce most of the names on the back of my labels, much less have a clue as to what they meant…this one had me baffled for a while. After a lot of research online and at the library, with everything from EWG’s website, to chemical dictionaries, I finally found a method to the madness. Chemicals like Triclosan, Glycol Ethers, Bisphenol-A, and Coal Tar Dyes were just a handful of those that were known to be extremely toxic, and linked to all sorts of scary illnesses and developmental problems.
I knew I had to keep this simple. If I made it too complicated, I was afraid I wouldn’t stick with it. I assumed it would be like a diet. You do really well for a while, then you cheat, then you throw it to the wind. But surprisingly enough, going toxic-free is a lot easier! Once you make the changes, you find you have less products to purchase and deal with. Once I realized I wasn’t compromising my need for great products with great results, I was hooked. It was easier and more rewarding than I could have ever imagined.
When we first started looking at the expense of toxic-free products I felt my anxiety rise. How in the world was I going to be able to afford to replace all of them? But, then I soon realized I had the wrong mind-set. I had been brilliantly conditioned by product companies to believe that I needed a specific product for every single cleaning and beautifying need in my home and on my body. I went through my home and found dozens of products that we didn’t really need, and when I tossed them, we didn’t miss them. (Click here for an example of what some of these products were for us.)
On an average I had been purchasing 7 different household cleaning products on a monthly basis (to keep our home and laundry clean). I was a clean freak, and constantly making sure our home was free of germs and bacteria. At the time, I had no clue I was actually filling it with toxins. When we chose to go toxic-free, I told my husband I wished there was a chemical free product, made from plant based ingredients that would clean my entire house. For a long time I made my own cleaning products. This was cheap, but they didn’t meet all my needs and despite the essential oils I used, my husband complained of the odor from the vinegar and tea tree oil I was using. While there is certainly nothing wrong with making your own products, and it’s an excellent solution for many, I just needed a simpler solution. One that was cost effective. And, making our home and clothes smell nice would be a bonus!
My husband and I came together with some brilliant minds and experts on toxic-free living and cleaning, and we developed a product called CLEAN. It can be used for over 10 different household cleaning needs…and I clean my ENTIRE home from top to bottom with it. It has freed up an awful lot of cabinet space, simplified cleaning, and, I was able to get rid of all of those child safety locks on my cabinets because there is no longer hazardous products in them. I no longer have to worry about us breathing in chemicals I’m cleaning with, eating them off our dishes, or wearing them around the clock in our clothes.
I have replaced them all with one product— CLEAN. Now that’s simple. By sharing our toxic-free lifestyle with those I love, I feel amazing knowing my parents, grandparents, and other family members not only have a safer home, but I’ve helped them by making it simple. And I am actually helping them SAVE money! Now that is rewarding.
